Red Earth Estate is Dubbo’s only winery and is located on Camp Road, just past the entrance to the Zoo. Ken and Christine Borchardt established the business in 2000 and have been working solidly over the years to build the successful venture Red Earth is today.

Now in our 11th year, we are the focal point of winemaking in this region.  Since our first vintage in 2001, we have been awarded a total of 33 Medals and 6 Trophies for our wines.   There is no doubt we are serious about our wine.

All our wines are made on site using fruit which we have nurtured and handpicked from our vineyard.  We specialise in lighter bodied red wines, similar to European styles.   Our dry whites are fruity and soft and we also cater for those who like a sweeter style wine. Our wines are low in alcohol and preservatives.  These lighter bodied wines are suited to a wider range of cuisine and are ideally suited to the relaxed Australian way of life.

As primary producers, environmental sustainability is critical to our ongoing viability. We care for the environment and ensure that our vineyard management practices involve minimal chemical use.

We are adapting to environmental changes by adopting vineyard practices that use the latest developments in crop protection and water use. We have planted many trees since purchasing the property and have never cut a tree on the property down. We focus on minimal yield per hectare, thus keeping the plant in balance and resulting in minimal stress to the vine and quality fruit for the winery.

Recycling is very important to us. We recycle all packaging and bottles, and even the marc and must produced in the winemaking process is recycled as compost.

We also recycle our winery waste water and air conditioning water back onto the vineyard and gardens. We also use tank water collected from the winery building to supplement garden watering.
Our winery building faces north with no western windows, to maximize the benefits of heating and cooling.   Earlier this year Solar panels were installed on the winery roof.  This solar PV system provides a substantial reduction in our power bills.

Our wine is bottled into new environmentally improved 750ml lightweight Lean+Green™ bottles.  Whilst maintaining the strength and stability of the heavier standard bottle, these bottles are between 18% and 28% lighter, thus providing savings in freight charges.

The manufacturers claim other environmental benefits such as:

  • A 20% reduction in energy use to produce the same number of bottles;
  • A carbon dioxide saving of more than 11,130 tonnes of CO2 per annum;
  • An average 12% drop in water usage per container; and
  • Overall water savings of 4,720kl per year.
